July 20, 2012MILWAUKEE, WI - On day three of the Under Armour Summer Jam tournament presented by NY2LA Sports, teams had their final chance to win games on the final day of pool play. As numerous players stood out, the competition and intensity is expected to turn up a notch on Saturday. Here are some of the headlines, as well as the top performers' recruiting updates, from Fridays action.
Nebraska prospect Agau Names A Leader
Jeff Green had a great career at Georgetown and is now having a strong NBA career. Now, the Hoyas are pitching that same situation to Akoy Agau of Team Nebraska Express. The 2013 combo forward likes the idea, too, so much so that he told Rivals.com on Friday at UA Summer Jam that John Thompson's squad was leading for his services. "I would be utilized well in that system playing as a combo forward," he said. "I like their pitch about having a similar situation to Jeff Green, too." Agau also holds offers from Florida, Missouri, UConn, West Virginia, Nebraska, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Villanova and Cincinnati, among others. The No. 90 player in the Rivals150 recently took trips to West Virginia and Georgetown following NBPA Camp in June. If Louisville was to offer him - sources say that could happen soon - the Cardinals would be right in the mix for the 4-star prospect. As he hopes to narrow his list to ten by August, Agau may end up waiting out a college decision until the completion of his senior season of basketball. While his recruitment his still far away from being a wrap, look for Georgetown to continue their strong push for Agau this July.
Muhammad Wants To Make A Name For Himself
Class of 2013 shooting guard Rashad Muhammad knows he is not his brother, nor does he want to live in his shadow. The rising senior believes it is his time to shine on the court as older brother Shabazz, who will likely be an NBA Lottery Pick following his freshman year at UCLA, is now out of the spotlight on the high school hardwood. "I want this year at Bishop Gorman to be a huge year for me in my development," he said. "I want to make a name for myself and want this (Bishop Gorman) to my team." The talented wing prospect showed his value in a loss on Friday, but penetrated, distributed, rebounded and scored the ball. A well-rounded talent, he holds offers from USC, SMU, Northwestern, UTEP, Colorado, Texas A&M, Maryland and San Diego State, with interest from Loyola Marymount, UConn and Missouri showing some interest. With no leaders on his plate, Muhammad is gaining a strong vibe from USC, San Diego State and Loyola Marymount as all three have gotten him on campus and are constantly recruiting him hard. Look for the new Muhammad to have a big year both on and off the court in his development.
Stephens Making Strides With SEC Schools Eying On
As Georgia head coach Mark Fox looked on, along with coaches from South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Clemson, Penn State, Maryland and more, 2013 ATL XPress power forward Quinton Stephens was the main focus as his partner in crime, Trayvon Reed , was out with a knee injury. The long, lean and versatile rising senior played well with schools looking on and hopes to have a plan heading into August. Reed - who fields offers from Georgia Tech, Miami, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Memphis, Tennessee and more - will cut his list down to eight schools in August, take a few official visits and hopefully decide before his high school season starts. Wide-open at the moment, more options could emerge for Stephens as Penn State, Xavier, Temple and Harvard are all looking at him, but no schools have come out on top as leaders. "I'm wide open," he told Rivals.com. "I'm just considering all of my options - old and new - and looking at everything." As the SEC and ACC are all over him, look for the No. 147 player in the Rivals150 to wind up staying in the south.
Mickey Looking To Cut List Soon
When Jordan Mickey got the ball in his hands on Friday, he made moves to the basket and scored the rock. The 2013 combo forward, who is converting from a power forward into a small forward, showed off his athleticism, scoring ability, defensive skills and much more in a tough loss. With SMU head coach Larry Brown looking on, along with tons of others schools, Mickey showed bits and pieces of how good he could be. The Urban DFW player, ranked No. 51 in the Rivals150, has an idea of who he likes, according to his father. "There are four or five schools really standing out to us," he told Rivals.com. "They are standing out in various ways because of their efforts in recruiting Jordan, as well as on and off the court. Mickey is being pursued by Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Louisville, SMU, Alabama, Kansas, Texas, West Virginia and more. As he has visited a ton of campuses recently, he must take in a few more college visits before narrowing things down to four or five schools in the month of August and possibly deciding on a college before his senior season of basketball begins.
Under Armour Summer Jam Recruiting Tidbits - Day Three
2014 Team Superstar small forward Malik Pope was limited to only a few touches, and, therefore was not able to produce on the court. Nevertheless, the highly recruited No. 14 player in the Rivals100 has a vast amount of scholarships on his plate. Pope holds offers from Arizona, Baylor, California, USC, UCLA, Washington and Colorado, among others. With no focus on his recruitment, Pope played in front of a number of high-majors for his morning game and continues to draw positive buzz on the west coast.
More college looks have picked up for 2013 small forward DeAndre Bembry recently. His newest offers come from Providence, Penn State, Temple, SMU, Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri State, Delaware and others. With Rhode Island and Miami likely to get him onto campus first, the Sports U product played well in a comeback win on Friday as he constantly got to the basket and to the free throw line. Auburn, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and others are also involved, and have been for the long haul. Look for some more offers to come in for the North Carolina native before July ends.
